Migraine Triggers

Migraines are chronic headaches that can last for hours or even days. They are often preceded by flashing lights/auras, blind spots in vision or tingling in the arms. They can be so severe that nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light are common, often causing a disruption in daily life activities.

Migraine Triggers:

  • Hormonal changes in women ~ fluctuations in estrogen commonly trigger headaches in many women with migraines, they often report having headaches immediately before or during their periods, when there is a drastic change in estrogen levels
  • Foods- alcohol (especially beer and red wine), aged cheeses, chocolate, aspartamine, overuse of caffeine, and monosodium glutamate (MSG). Eating meals irregularly or fasting can also trigger migraines
  • Extra emotional stress
  • Sensory stimuli- visual, aural, or strong smells
  • Changes in sleep pattern; over-sleeping or insomnia
  • Intense physical exertion or activity that is abnormal
  • Changes in the environment/climate
  • Certain medications

 Alternative Medicine:

  • Acupuncture
  • Biofeedback
  • Massage
  • Herbs, vitamins, minerals, and B-12; magnesium sulfate supplements and coenzyme Q10 supplements are exceptionally helpful
